a quick Toronto visit

IMG_20160416_130932[1]arrived in Toronto late Friday night, and came home at 10 AM on Monday morning.  i was there for a conference, but managed to get in one major activity.

the extracurricular activity was the Toronto Zoo, where they not only have baby Giant Pandas, but also baby white lion cubs, baby polar bears and a baby rhino.  sadly we weren’t able to see the lion cubs or rhino, but we did see the pandas and polar bear.  SO adorable.  need i say more?

some good meals were had including dinners at Little India and the Keg Steakhouse and dessert at the Milk Bar.  yum.  i may have to order some of those cookies online, they were delicious. and they had a crack pie.  i didn’t try that, but maybe next time.

one thing to note about flying out of Toronto (maybe all of Canada?) is the whole customs/luggage process.  it wasn’t very user friendly.   unlike SFO, you can’t check your luggage at the airline counter to go international.  you need to tag your luggage at the counter, then take your luggage through customs, then send it through screening, and then it goes on the conveyor belt to the plane. it’s not like the process is terrible, or that odd, but there are no signs telling you what to do. it’s a little frustrating.

the customs agents are less than pleasant as well.  i know they have to be serious, but come on now, i just want to leave your country, stop with all of the questions.  maybe they’re being extra nasty so that we don’t all want to flee there after the November election.

one good thing about the whole set-up…….no customs clearance in SF. deplane, grab luggage, and go. done.

no excuses

miya-ando-bioluminescent-leaves-537x405there is no excuse for my lack of content, except that i haven’t been anywhere.  i figure anecdotes about my cat, things happening in town, and my commute to SF are not things anyone wants to hear about.  if you do, you really need a hobby.

next week i’m off to Toronto (i’ve been told you pronounce that as Toronno, eliminate the T, to sound like a native.)  i know nothing about Toronto, and i’m looking forward to the trip.  i don’t have a ton of time to poke around, but i’m sure i will find something to see/do.

Puerto Rico is only a few weeks away now, which is very exciting.  i bought a guide book, which looks great on my coffee table, and probably contains lots of useful information i haven’t read yet. isn’t that what the plane ride is for? the only thing i have done is booked a kayak trip so i can see the bioluminescent bays.

i don’t know if i’ll be able to get any decent photos, holding a camera steady in a kayak at night to take a photo seems like a hard thing to do…..but i will make the attempt.

oh, i’ve also booked a trip to Alaska in September to see (hopefully) the Northern Lights.  that will be fun, it’s going to be a mother daughter adventure.

so, although i won’t be writing every day or even every week, there will be new posts coming your way over the next couple of months.

stay tuned.

it was inevitable……

i’m pretty sure i can’t ever go somewhere and not take a tour.  i thought maybe Cabo would be the exception, but then i saw a boat and city tour combo. i was in.

i met up with the other folks at 9:30 AM (such a reasonable time) and we made our way to the marina. we headed out on a glass bottom boat to the arches, where we saw some fish and a couple of seals.  next on the agenda was a glass blowing shop.  we then had time to walk around town, which is pretty busy and very touristy.  still fun to see.

from there we went off to visit San Jose del Cabo, the quieter, smaller town about 30 minutes from San Lucas.

lunch, mariachi band, church of San Jose del Cabo, walk around town, shopping and then home.  everything a boat and city tour promises to be.

resort living

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort is my home for the next few days, and it’s quite the place.  it reminds me a little of El Cid in Mazatlan, but this place is giant, with golf carts to shuttle you around.  the carts run on system similar to BART with a blue, green and red line.  we are on the blue line.

i suppose it is the same as many time share resorts, rooms of all shapes and sizes including villas with their own pools.  lots of pools, restaurants, bars and of course time share presentations.  unlike Mazatlan i will not be partaking in any presentations, just say no. Nancy Reagan would be proud of me.

today consisted of breakfast, going to the main building to check out the shops and get the lay of the land, shuttling to the skydeck pool and lunch.  then shuttling back to our building, a walk to the million dollar store (the resort market), napping at the pool by our room, a shower  and now off to drinks & dinner, it’s a rough life.

tomorrow i’m off to meet a friend of mine that lives here and hopefully get a glimpse of real life in this area.

Cabo bound

Mazatlan in spring, Cabo in winter, i think i’m practicing to be retired. at this moment i am waiting on the Santa Rosa Airport tarmac to take off for LA, from there i will head to Cabo.

i love my little airport, it’s the Sonoma County Charles M. Schultz Airport, and you’re greeted by snoopy (statue) along with other peanuts characters.  It doesn’t make up for all the people coughing and sneezing on this flight, but at least everything started off with a smile.

this is the second family vacation of 2015, the first was Disneyland in October. hopefully this trip will be a little crowded and a bit cooler.  it was 102 during my stay at the happiest place on earth….happy but hot.

i haven’t been to Cabo before, i’m excited.  it’s cold and wet here, so the thought of being warm, at a beach, with a drink in my hand sounds pretty good.

what happened?

e8c54a1d0aab40ab18c8a140baa7e941i have fallen into old patterns once again….no posts for months at a time. i often think that i should probably just retire this blog since i don’t travel as much anymore and no one reads it anyway, but i just can’t bring myself to do it.

i have investigated making a coffee table book of this fine piece of literature, but then think it will just be one more thing to go into landfill when i die.  it’s sad to think all of my photos will get thrown away as well.  oh well, like they say, “you can’t take it with you”.

there hasn’t been any travel of late, except for a trip for one day to Seattle, and one day trips don’t count.

i do have a couple of things on the horizon….Disneyland in October, Los Cabos in December, London in February and Puerto Rico in May.  nothing quite as major as a month in Argentina, but fun none-the-less.

i will make sure to put in a post or two about these excursions, and if anything else pops up, i’ll be sure to make note of it.

déjà vu

IMG_0531“from French, literally “already seen”, is the phenomenon of having the strong sensation that an event or experience currently being experienced, has already been experienced in the past, whether it has actually happened or not.”

this is what i am experiencing regarding Bonneville. Mother Nature seems to be against land speed racing again this year, she has drenched the salt with many a storm and it looks like there may only be a stretch of salt in good enough condition for one short course.  a short course does my Dad no good at all.

drivers are currently casting their yay or nay votes for racing on just one short course, and unlike last year, if the salt doesn’t improve significantly in the next week the officials will cancel the race providing lots of lead time.  i’m sure the international teams will appreciate the effort, as it’s an expensive trip to make if you can’t run.

if they do have one short course we will all still go to the salt, but my Dad won’t be driving and we won’t be setting a new record.  very disappointing. again.

all we can do now is pray that a heat wave hits Wendover and things dry out a bit.

timing

stopwatch-handtiming,”an act or instance of observing and recording the elapsed time of an act, contest, process, etc.” i like to time things…actually it can be a bit of an obsession, for example:

my best time driving from the Oakland house to the Tahoe house 3 hours and 10 minutes
my best time driving from the Sebastopol house to the Tahoe house 3 hours and 35 minutes
my best time driving from Oakland to Sebastopol 1 hour and 5 minutes
my best time driving from SF to Sebastopol 1 hour and 10 minutes

my best time driving from Oakland to Wendover 9 hours
longest bus ride from SF to Sebastopol 3 hours and 15 minutes (terrible traffic)
best bus ride from SF to Sebastopol 1 hour 25 minutes

really the list goes on, i constantly time trips.  as a kid we didn’t go on road trips, we went to Tahoe and there was a routine.  the places within the routine changed throughout the years, but the pattern remained the same.  leave the house, stop and get something to eat/gas/bathroom, go straight to Tahoe. we rarely veered from the path, went a different way, or stopped to see something along the way.

i still travel that way.  i try to get from point A to point B in the quickest time possible and feel disappointed when something out of my control gets in the way of my timing.  i stop at one place and one place only (unless it’s closed) on the way up and back from Tahoe unless i have an errand to run before i get to the lake.

i like the routine, the constant, the comfort of knowing how something is going to go or be. does that mean i can change plans, that i couldn’t stop at a different place, no, i can and have done so, but it’s never quite the same. better? worse?  no, just different.
