blogging guilt

i was at a work lunch today and we were talking about social media.  one colleague is a blogger extraordinaire and mentioned that she blogs daily, then made comment that i blog about every six months.

sigh.  it is sad but true. so, suffering from a bout bloggers guilt i decided to write a short post today.  again, not too many folks read this blog (although i now i know my colleague does) so i don’t think i’m causing a disservice to anyone by not writing, but for the month of September i will have at least two posts!  so there.

two posts.  last September i was posting daily.  granted i was in Argentina and seeing something different everyday, which provided me with unlimited content.  what was i doing this time last year? let me look…….oh right, i was on my way to San Martin de los Andes.  everything was covered in volcanic ash.

thankfully no ash here in the Bay Area, just blue skies and a slight chill in the air.  i guess fall is approaching.  historically indian summer should be coming soon, but since nothing about the weather is following routine this year, it’s hard to say what is going to happen.  that being said, i’m fairly certain there won’t be a volcano involved, at least here.

picture review

i was going through my Cologne photos and realized i forgot to include a post about the padlocks on the Hohenzollern Bridge.

the bridge crosses over the Rhine River, and i walked across one afternoon.  the entire bridge is covered in padlocks.  the locks are a symbol of true love.  you are supposed to walk across a bridge with your sweetheart, attach a lock scrawled with your names to the structure, and then throw the key into the river below.

the final results

just in case you were interested…………the final roadster time was 228 mph. that was our best time to date, but unfortunately the current record is 231 mph.

next year driver and engine will change and my Dad will be driving once again. maybe 2013 will be the year the team sets a new record.

until then, pray for good salt!

it’s hot hot hot

and i don’t mean that in a Buster Poindexter kind of way, i mean it was crazy hot today. according to one of the shop keepers it was the hottest day of the year. of course i happen to be here the hottest day of the year, i love heat so much.

it would have been a perfect day to visit Claudius Therme, the wellness spa and pools, but alas it was a little expensive for the remaining budget. i could have gone for a two hour pool visit only, but once there i would have wanted to stay longer, have a massage, a facial, a special German scrub of some kind……i know how it goes. it goes with me going to the poor house. so i opted to go to an attraction near the spa, the zoo.

i like visiting zoos when i travel, there is always at least one animal i haven’t seen before, and some that feel like old friends.

i must admit this was the first zoo i’ve been to that had raccoon and badger habitats. who knew they were “attractions” in other areas. maybe i should look into starting a raccoon export business!

after the zoo adventure i went back to the cathedral area to do a little souvenir shopping. i stopped in at the 4711 store, i had to, this is the place it originated. 4711 is a eau de cologne that has been around in some form since 1792. legend has it that it was created by a monk as a wedding gift for a local merchant. the merchant then started to produce the water as a “remedy”. the name 4711 came from the address where the shop was located.

when i was little Daisy lived across the street from us; she was a wonderful woman and i remember spending a lot of time playing at her house. she had a bottle of 4711 in her bathroom and i loved looking at it; it was so pretty and seemed so grown-up. maybe her husband had traveled to Germany and brought it back as a gift, maybe she was in Germany and fell in love with the scent and brought it home as a reminder of the trip, or maybe she saw the pretty bottle at a local store and had to have it. i don’t know the story of how she came to have 4711, but what i do know is that i still think of her every time i see, or smell the cologne.

so that ends my visit to Cologne (Köln); tomorrow i head back to San Francisco via Munich. it was a good trip, although short. weidersehen!

game over

i think three days of game show is enough, especially when you’re not working a booth. so goodbye GamesCom and hello sights.

there were a few things on the list to see and i saw a fair amount today. my Mom would be proud, i even made it to a museum. museums are never on the top of my list, but the Ludwig Museum was on the list of sights and it was conveniently located next to the cathedral.

the special exhibit was pop art from the 60’s, which was cool, as i don’t think i’ve seen a real Warhol before. the other pieces didn’t seem to be from one era, but more of a sampling of artists. that is actually what i like best, a little of this and a little of that. this a Robert Rauchenberg piece entitled Tree Frog. huh.
IMG_4476

cathedral, check. Ludwig, check. next? how about a boat trip down the River Rhine? boat trip, check. these “crane” buildings are crazy. who would want to live there, is Germany immune to earthquakes?!

IMG_4524i stopped in at the Schokoladen (chocolate museum), how could i not? the smell alone was amazing. i didn’t actually take the tour, but i did spend ample time in the gift shop. best museum gift shop ever. i didn’t buy anything a) it was a million degrees outside and b) maybe not the same, but i can get Lindt chocolates at home.

with the boat ticket came a city tour, so i hopped on the bus and toodled around Cologne for an hour. originally i had wanted the boat and brewery tour, but alas there was a misunderstanding and i ended up with a city tour instead. turns out that wasn’t a bad thing as all of the brewery tours are in German, and my German is non-existent so, i opted to sit at the brewery and have a beer instead. drinking the beer is the really fun part of a brewery tour anyhow isn’t it?

i ended the day with a trip to see the local cemetery, Melatenfriedhof. i love a good cemetery, and this one was also on the list of sights to see. it wasn’t the best i’ve been to, but it was really pretty and very peaceful. i kept thinking it would be a great place for a picnic. it’s probably not on the top ten most romantic picnic spots, but it is beautiful.

from there i hopped back on the train and headed back to my Best Western Premiere home.

strudel anyone?

On Monday i was at the Salt Flats watching cars break land speed records and now i’m in Germany watching kids break gaming records.gamescom2012

i’m in Cologne, Germany at the GamesCom show, which is the world’s largest interactive entertainment expo. i have been to the E3 Expo in LA many times and i knew this show was going to be bigger, but i didn’t realize how much bigger. it’s like E3 super-sized.

the show runs Wednesday-Sunday, and will have over 275k attendees. there are 11 halls total, and the whole convention center is 120,000 square meters. (according to an online conversion chart that is 1,290,000 square feet). a couple halls make up the business area, where i spend most of my time, as it isn’t as crowded and it’s relatively quiet. there are expo halls where companies like Ubisoft, Sony, Electronic Arts, and Activision have their ginormous booths showcasing their games. then there are halls that contain activities like kart racing, bicycle racing, and table top games. a little something for everyone.

i’m off to day three of the show, wish me luck!

my third and final day

sadly today is my last day at the salt. i’m off to Germany tomorrow, so i couldn’t stay any longer.

as the sun rose over the Motel 6 pool, it certainly didn’t seem like we would have to worry about thunderstorms. it would be great if the salt could stay dry today, the harder the surface the easier it is to drive.

IMG_4256we made our way to the pit, and promptly started working on the car. after a tasty breakfast the crew hooked up the car to the truck, and headed on down to line.

and those of us in the pits….you guessed it, waited! one new addition to the pit this year was a solar oven. we tried it out yesterday and made a batch of cookies and some focaccia bread. it turned out ok, but we knew we could do better. today we pre-heated the oven (put it in the sun with nothing in it) and waited until it got to 200 degrees before we put in the cookies. that worked a lot better and i was able to enjoy a tasty treat before i made my way back to Salt Lake City Airport.

IMG_4377 IMG_4376
while waiting for my flight to board my Dad called. the car ran, and ran well, we hit 224 mph. the record is 231 and our competition this year made it to 229, so we still have some work to do. it’s only Monday though and a lot can happen in three days. hopefully when i land in Germany tomorrow i will have a message saying the car is in impound.

another day at the salt

day two at the salt starts with record runs at 7 AM. record runs are for cars that broke a record the day before.
IMG_4316if you break a record you have an hour to get to the impound area and then you have four hours to work on your car. the car spends the night in impound and runs the next morning. if i understand the record setting process correctly, it goes something like this………

say the record is 200 mph and you go 205 in mile 2, you break that 200 mph record. during your record run you need to go over 200 mph again in the same mile, in this case mile 2, and the new record is the average time of your two runs. sounds like one of those problem solving questions from math class right?!

did i mention there was a fair amount of waiting while at the salt? the main attraction in the pits this year is a phenomenal car by Triet & Davenport called the Target 550. it’s not running at this meet, maybe at the Mohave Mile in Sept. or at the Bonneville race in October. i can’t wait to see this baby run, she is a beaut!
IMG_4307IMG_4331a windstorm hit mid afternoon, causing a flurry of activity in the pits, taking down the tents and packing up. the course was shut down for awhile, but eventually reopened. sadly we did not end up in impound today. we made one run late in the day, and ended up spinning out right after the start.

IMG_4375

damn soft salt! driver and car are fine, and we received the official okay from inspection, so we should be in good shape for tomorrow. thunderstorms are on the horizon though, fingers crossed they just bypass Wendover.

a day at the races

Bonneville National Speed Week runs Thursday to Thursday, and it’s usually held within the first couple of weeks of August.

the racing begins on Saturday morning; Thursday and Friday are spent setting up your pit and getting the car through inspection.

Saturday starts with a drivers meeting at 9 AM, followed by a drive down the course, and then everyone gets their cars ready to get in line and race.

IMG_4264

3 out 4 tracks are open today, one is closed due to the rain yesterday, so things are moving a little slowly. we put our car in line about 3 hours ago, and we are still about 18 cars back. i take the opportunity to walk around and take some pix.

IMG_4348a new scoop is on our car this year and a couple of other modifications have been made, so it’s anyone’s guess how the run will go.

IMG_4357
did i say there was a lot of waiting? and waiting. and waiting. so i wander and take more pictures.

IMG_4297

and we run. 218 mph. good speed for us, but not enough to set the record…….now we wait for the car to come back to the pit to find out how it ran from the driver perspective and to see if anything needs tweaking.

did i mention we wait a lot? and i wander some more.

IMG_4277

the car is back and it’s time for the team meeting. this is where every shift in gear is analyzed and they determine next steps. the good news is nothing appears to have broken and we can run again. it’s pretty late in the day to make another run today, but we are in good shape for tomorrow.

testing 1-2-3

348sit’s been awhile since i’ve posted while traveling, so i thought i should see if i still remembered the process for posting and including an image. you need to remember i am not tech savvy.

so here i sit at Oakland International Airport writing a little post, killing time until i board my flight to Salt Lake City.

from SLC i will head to Wendover for another trip out to the Bonneville Salt Flats. if you follow my posts you’ll know this is an annual trip to watch my Dad and his racing posse compete in the land speed trials. they run a modified 28′ Ford roadster, and I think we’re in the c/gr class this year.

could this finally be the year we set a record over 200 mph? only time will tell, so stay tuned!
