Zagreb is my final stop and i’m on my own as far as sightseeing. i’ve been going at such a quick pace for the last 10 days, it will be kind of nice to have some leisure wander time.
the Hotel Dubrovnik is my home while i’m here and you can’t ask for a better location. it’s walking distance to the old town, the cathedral, and parks. the room is fine, but the bathroom is quite small, the toilet was installed on an angle so it would fit, and i can barely turn around in the shower. the staff are very nice and breakfast is a good assortment, although i’m not sure deep fried celery should be on anyone’s breakfast menu.
what to see, where to start? i took a walk up the hill to the old part of town and wandered through the streets, into a couple of museum gift shops, and ended up buying a ticket to visit the Museum of Broken Relationships.
this museum won the Kenneth Hudson Award for the most innovative museum in Europe, and it was well deserved.
the museum started as a traveling exhibit revolving around the concept of failed relationships. the museum offers a chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creation. people have contributed items and stories to go with, some made me laugh out loud, and other brought tears to my eyes. it was unlike any other exhibit i have ever seen, and if you ever have the chance to check it out, do!
i then headed to Park Maksimir and the Zagreb Zoo. i’ve said it before, i love a zoo trip in foreign countries…..their zoo is quite small but they have a nice selection of animals and the habitats are nice. except for the one with an animal that i swear was a gopher…….all you could see was a huge mound of dirt. so maybe i should rephrase, not a nice habitat for us, but luxurious for a burrowing rodent family.
i made my way back to the hotel for a rest before meeting a friend from my old job, for drinks and dinner.
dinner was at this great spot called Kai Street Food Bar….it’s super small, so you have to get there early, but i’d eat there again. and again.
i came across a festival on the way home, it was the Festival for Equal Opportunities, and it goes on for multiple days. the stage acts seem to be an assortment of music and other forms of entertainment, and i had the pleasure of watching two music groups. a fun way to end the day.
